CARSON CITY -- The unveiling of the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on the grounds of the state capital Wednesday was especially moving for Louise McGuire of Las Vegas.
Her husband's name was one of the 84 officers who died in the line of duty.
"It was very touching," she said after the hour-long ceremony. "This is in remembrance of all the wonderful officers."
Robert McGuire, a Nevada Highway Patrolman, was killed by a drunken driver on Boulder Highway in May 1961 while answering a call. Louise was accompanied by her three daughters at the ceremony which was attended by about 300 including Gov. Bob Miller, Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa and Clark County Sheriff John Moran.
Miller said this was a "fitting tribute to these slain officers ... who have shaped Nevada history through sacrificing their own lives."
The monument, which lists every name of officers who died in the line of duty from 1861 to the present, was financed through the contributions of law enforcement officers and through donations from Las Vegas casinos.
A candlelight vigil was held at dusk.
