Residents petition for new high school

"We've got 480 students in this area," said Lexi Mulhern with the Silver Stage High School Coalition. "It's ridiculous for us not to have a high school."
Pupils in Silver Springs now either go to Fernley High School or to Dayton High. Silver Springs has about 7,500 residents living in an area of rapid growth.
Mulhern said the petition being prepared for the Lyon School Board is neither a formal, legal petition nor a ballot initiative.
"We just collected the signatures to show the board there is widespread support for a high school," she said. "Right now, our kids are bused a long way to other schools."
Lyon County Schools Superintendent Nat Lommori said he sympathizes with the residents' desire for a high school, but also has to look at the financial reality.
"There are people that would like a high school tomorrow," he said. "We don't have the funds. It would cost from $8 million to $10 million and a bond issue would be required."
The last Lyon school bond passed in 1994 for $15.8 million built Sutro Elementary School, and made additions to Dayton High School and Fernley High.
