SPECIAL TO THE SUN

Drag racing will revisit a period 30 years ago when Stardust Memories is presented Saturday at the quarter-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway strip.

The night race event will include five groups, ranging from AA Fuel Altereds to Top Gas Dragsters, along with three rounds of bracket racing. All cars must be 1972 models or earlier.

Among the top names expected to compete will be The Winged Express, an entry formerly driven by the late Wild Willie Borsch in the 1960s. The super-charged nitro burning Chrysler turns times of about seven seconds at speeds of 200 mph behind the guidance of driver Mike Boyd of Los Alamitos, Calif.

Owned by Al Marcellus of Anaheim, The Winged Express is entered several times a year at match races exhibitions across the nation.

Top Gas entrants will include Brendan Murry in Running Wild; Mike Cross in Flashback; and Juice Bucket II, a BB Fuel Dragster owned by Tom and Dixie Welch of Camarillo, Calif.

Top bracket racers will include several Las Vegas entrants.

An oldies band will play after the event, creating a car-show atmosphere.
