Filipino artists at Winchester Gallery

Friday, May 8, 1998 | 10:57 a.m.

The exhibit celebrates the 100th year of Philippine independence and marks the birth of the first constitutional democracy in Asia. "Kalayaan," which translates as "freedom," showcases the collective memory of the country's rich heritage, reflecting the long struggle which eventually led to independence.

Works in the exhibit are rendered in a variety of media, including oil paint, watercolor, oil pastel, wood and ceramic sculpture, photography and computer art.

Among the artists participating in the exhibit are Ben Torres, Josefina Robles, Rene Robles, Malou Valdez, Julian Eusebio, Bobby Saddul and Rufino Bagabaldo. Torres, a sculptor, is founder and president of the International Artist Group of Nevada.

Also exhibiting are several younger artists including 11-year-old Mary Beth Reta Talsig Acac, whose painting of "San Francisco" was chosen to be included as part of a mural in the new wing of McCarran airport. Eight-year-old Nina Recto, great-granddaughter of Claro M. Recto -- the Father of the Philippine Constitution -- and 3-year-old Kevin Torres both create computer-generated art.

In conjunction with the opening reception, a free concert by Filipino artists will be presented in Winchester theater. Performers will include Raul Vergerl Dedios, Vivienne Kearns and the Senior Hula Dancers and concert pianist Dr. George Regner.

"Kalayaan" was organized by the International Artist Group of Nevada in cooperation with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce to remind every Filipino-American to perpetuate his or her heritage.
