LV dealers wait for merger details

Thursday, May 7, 1998 | 11:43 a.m.

Don't expect to find any new Mercedes Benz luxury cars at the local Chrysler dealerships any time soon as a result of today's announced acquisition of Chrysler by Daimler-Benz of Germany.

General managers at two Chrysler dealerships said today that any changes in their current strategies won't be coming right away.

"We're taking a wait-and-see approach to this," said Rod Harvey, general manager of Desert Chrysler Plymouth. "Right now, you probably know more about it than we do."

Don Trudeau, general manager of Tom Saitta Integrity Chrysler Plymouth, said he didn't expect to see any of the luxury cars on his lot any time in the next year or two.

"One of the big benefits of a deal like this is that we may get some of Mercedes' product development ideas," Trudeau said.

Of greater benefit to Chrysler, he said, will be the company's ability to market trucks and vans in Europe.

"But I don't think there will be much impact here," he said.

Fletcher Jones Import Center is the exclusive dealer of Mercedes-Benz cars in Southern Nevada. A spokesman for the company was unavailable for comment this morning.
