Water District to protest aerojet company’s water application

Wednesday, May 6, 1998 | 9:13 a.m.

The Las Vegas Valley Water District will protest an Aerojet-General Corp. application for 36,150 acre feet of water in Coyote Springs, about 100 miles north of Las Vegas.

The water district board Tuesday approved spending $250 for filing a protest against the Aerojet rocket engine company request with State Engineer Michael Turnipseed. Aerojet filed for the ground water in July 1997.

"They filed for water we don't believe is there," Deputy General Manager Richard Wimmer said.

The National Park Service and Nevada Power Co. also have filed protests against the Aerojet request.

The water district had filed for 27,500 acre feet from Coyote Springs on Oct. 17, 1989.

Last month the Southern Nevada Water Authority, of which the water district is a member, approved spending $25 million for purchasing 7,500 acre feet of Coyote Springs water available from a developer.

The Coyote Springs Limited Liability Co. plans to develop a recreation/retirement community on 42,000 acres of Aerojet property. It offered the water to the water authority.
