Two Pahrump residents killed in accident
Wednesday, May 6, 1998 | 11:30 a.m.
Two Pahrump residents were killed in a head-on collision on State Route 160 at Blue Diamond Road this morning, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Steve Marhold said.
Just after 5 a.m., a 1994 Ford pickup was headed east on State Route 160 while a 1988 Oldsmobile was traveling west, Marhold said.
"For an unknown reason, the Ford pickup crossed over the center line, striking the oldsmobile headon," he said.
Both drivers, 39- and 63-year-old men, were pronounced dead at the scene. The names were withheld pending the notification of their families, Marhold said.
A passenger in the pickup, Leonard Aponas, 35, from Pahrump, was airlifted by a Flight for Life helicopter to University Medical Center where he was in critical condition. He suffered multiple injures and was undergoing surgery this morning, Marhold said.
There were no witnesses to the accident, Marhold said. A motorist who came upon the accident afterward notified the NHP, he said.
