Stars active off the field

Wednesday, May 6, 1998 | 10:54 a.m.

NASHVILLE --- There was no action on the field for the Las Vegas Stars on Wednesday at Greer Stadium as heavy rain forced cancellation of their scheduled game against the Nashville Sounds.

Off the field, however, was another story.

The San Diego Padres obtained right-handed starting pitcher Scott Sanders from the Detroit Tigers for an undisclosed amount of cash and a player to be named later and immediately assigned Sanders to Las Vegas.

Sanders starred for the Stars in 1992 and 1993. He ranks eighth in team history in most complete games (8) and is ninth in career strikeouts (212). He still holds the team's single-season record for most strikeouts in a season (161 in 1993).

Sanders joins a Stars pitching staff already overloaded with starting pitching.

Las Vegas' starting staff is on a roll, producing a 2.15 ERA since April 25. The staff has produced seven consecutive quality starts (at least six innings pitched with three runs or less allowed). During those seven games, Stars starters have a 2-0 record with a 1.52 ERA, allowing just 39 hits and nine runs in 53 1/3 innings while striking out 54.

Weather permitting, the Stars and Sounds will play a doubleheader today starting at 3 p.m. (PDT). Left-hander Heath Murray (2-1, 3.06 ERA) and right-hander Kevin Lomon (0-2, 2.66 ERA) are scheduled to start for Las Vegas.
