Brown to fill out constable’s term

Wednesday, May 6, 1998 | 9:49 a.m.

The County Commission has selected Herb Brown to fill out the remainder of retired North Las Vegas Constable Lou Tabat's term.

Tabat resigned April 30, after 24 years as constable, leaving a vacancy until December. Elections will be held in the fall for voters to choose someone to serve in that position for the next four years.

Brown was picked Tuesday over Steve Bergstrom, a decision Commissioner Mary Kincaid said was "very difficult for me."

Kincaid, who represents North Las Vegas, said both were well-qualified for the job.

"I was impressed with Steve Bergstrom, but my comfort level is with Herb Brown," Kincaid said. "He's been in law enforcement a long time here and was even a federal marshal for the state."

Kincaid said both would make good candidates for the office, which pays $53,000 a year based on fee collections.

Brown was U.S. District Marshal for the District of Nevada from 1994-97. He also served with the North Las Vegas Police Department since 1971 before he retired in 1993 after a year as assistant chief.

Except for one year as a police officer in 1975, Bergstrom has no police background. For the past 22 years he has worked in real estate, marketing insurance and investments. Bergstrom, a Republican, filed for the seat Monday.
