Weekend Update: Music, Theater, Etc.
Friday, May 1, 1998 | 10:14 a.m.
TOO COOL FOR ANY ROOM -- The jazzmen who'll play Saturday's annual Jazz Picnic need a whole amphitheater to contain them! Bring your picnic basket and come listen to the fine sounds of the Las Vegas All-Star High School Jazz Band, Ricky Arroyo's Latin-Jazz Percussion Ensemble, the Bill Trujillo Sextet, the 18-piece UNLV Jazz Ensemble and Brass-on-the-Grass from 4:30 to 10 p.m. in the amphitheater at Clark County Government Center, 500 Grand Central Parkway. Admission is free.
KLEZMER CONCERT -- The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band will fill the Charleston Heights Arts Center Ballroom, 800 S. Brush St., with their mingling of ethnic melodies, theater songs and jazzy Yiddish pop music at 8 p.m. Saturday. Their high-energy performances have delighted audiences from Iowa to Austria. Tickets are $12, $10 for students, seniors and the disabled at the door.
JAZZ GOES TO COLLEGE -- Community College of Southern Nevada's Jazz Combo Concert, at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, brings the music of two student combos and the faculty jazz sextet to the school's Performing Arts Center Little Theatre, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave. Tickets are $5. For reservations, call 651-5483.
THEATER
PREACHER MAN -- In "Godspell," the main character preaches to the cast with humorous parables, songs and dances, to teach them lessons about how to be better people. The musical, based on the Bible's book of Matthew, plays at 7 p.m. today and Saturday in Silverado High School's theater, 1650 Silver Hawk Ave. Tickets are $7 at the door.
WHAT THE DICKENS? -- "Drood," a tongue-in-cheek musical look at the Victorian Music Hall era of melodrama, is a play within a play about love, obsession, opium, murder and investigation. The audience, ultimately, will decide the play's outcome based on their assessment of potential suspects. The fun begins at 8 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at UNLV's Judy Bayley Theater. Tickets are $10 at the Ham Hall box office, 895-3801, and at Dillard's department stores.
A TALE OF PUPPY LOVE -- "Sylvia," a fetching comedy about love, marriage and canine obsession, is more than a shaggy dog story -- it's a shaggy, talking dog story. See it at 8 p.m. today and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Summerlin Library theater, 1771 Inner Circle Drive. Tickets are priced from $12.50 to $20 and can be reserved by calling 647-7469. Leave the little ones at home -- what Sylvia says when she spots a cat isn't fit for young ears.
ETC.
HOT TICKET -- The Craft Fair and Rib Burn-Off is a perennial Las Vegas favorite. The 14th edition will be held from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Sunset Park. Ten local barbecue restaurants will show off their ribs and chicken; handmade arts and crafts will be on show and sale; rock, pop and oldies music will fill the air, and more than 60 classic cars and hot rods will be on display. Admission at the gate is $2 for adults, $1 for kids 17 and under, and tots under 3 are admitted free.
DOWN BY THE DAM -- More than 150 booths of hand-crafted items, including jewelry, wood carvings, quilts and toys, will fill Boulder City's Bicentennial Park and Wilbur Square this weekend at the 20th annual Spring Jamboree and Craft Fair. The fun begins with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. each day and food booths will be open from 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. "A Salute to America" will be presented in the gazebo by Dance Etc.
