Women's tennis team got revenge Thursday at the WAC Women's Tennis Championship.
Playing at the Mary Potishman Lard Tennis Center, the Lady Rebels took four of six singles points en route to a 5-3 upset of second-seeded San Diego State in the quarterfinals. At last year's tournament, SDSU eliminated then-top seeded UNLV by the same score in the same round.
The Lady Rebels, who now advance to the semi-finals, improved to 10-11 overall and 3-2 in the league.
"It feels good to beat the defending WAC champions," Head Coach Ola Malmqvist said . "It was without question the biggest win of the year for our program (ranked 38th). We saw a great effort from the whole team and we're looking forward to trying to move into the finals."
Gee Gee Garvin upset 95th-ranked Maggie Cole in straight sets at the top spot, 6-4, 6-1. Susie Kocsis used three sets to overtake Dorota Wozniak at the No. 2 spot, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3. Veronica Goude came from behind to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 over Sarah Donovan in the third spot and Britta Gabl cruised pastWhitney Wells 6-0, 6-1 at the fifth position.
Heading into doubles needing just one point, UNLV fell at the top spot before clinching the victory with an 8-4 win by Kocsis and Marcella Valkenhoff.
UNLV will face third-seeded New Mexico on Friday. The Lobos were 5-2 winners over Rice.
