Greenspun Junior High honors superintendent

Friday, May 1, 1998 | 10:06 a.m.

Greenspun Junior High School has announced that Brian Cram is the 1998 winner of their annual Communication Award.

Cram, superintendent of schools for the Clark County School District, will be presented with the award May 22 at 10 a.m. in the Henderson school's library during the Greenspun Media Fair featuring human-interest stories.

The award's inscription -- "Contribution to Freedom for All People through Communication" -- is a tribute to Barbara and Hank Greenspun, for whom the school was named, and fostering freedom of speech for all people through the press.

Teacher Ira Kimball's sixth-grade class created the award in 1992 as a living memory to the Greenspuns. The late Hank Greenspun founded the Las Vegas SUN in 1950, and was publisher until his death in 1989. His wife remains the publisher today.

Cram was awarded for his leadership and service to community, educational and professional organizations.

Cram attended Fifth Street Elementary School and Las Vegas High School before earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Utah, and masters and doctorate degrees from Arizona State University.

He began his CCSD career in 1965 and worked in several administrative capacities before becoming superintendent of schools in May 1998.

A superintendent for more than 10 years, Cram has managed a school system that has constructed 77 new schools and 11 more still under construction. Ten more schools are planned.

The teaching staff and student enrollment has more than doubled in the same time period, making the district the ninth largest in the nation.
