Mayor-appointed committee to weigh ban on grocery slots

A possible ban on slot and video poker machines in grocery and convenience stores in the city of Las Vegas is being examined by a committee appointed by Las Vegas Mayor Jan Laverty Jones.
The committee, which has recommending power only, met Thursday for the first time.
Members are: Fred Darling, representing local convenience stores; Mary Lau, executive director of the Retail Association of Nevada; Scott Nelson, executive vice president and general counsel for station hotels; Assemblyman Richard Perkins, D-Henderson; Mike Rumbolz, president and chief operating officer for Anchor Gaming; and Faye Steinberg, a neighborhood activist.
During the meeting it was agreed by members that a study, to be conducted by Coopers & Lybrand and paid for by a local group of convenience store owners, should look at the following:
The next meeting of the committee will be in the next two weeks and the study should be completed in about 6 weeks, said Rumbolz, who is acting chair of the committee.
