Gerard Goodpasture, 40, was walking along the river near Fisherman's Park on Wednesday when he apparently slipped on the muddy bank and fell in, authorities said.
He was swept more than a half-mile down the river before he was spotted by witnesses, who called for help.
Sparks Firefighter Scott Bryant attempted to throw him a life line, but Goodpasture was unable to grab it.
Bryant then ran down river and waded into the water to grab the victim as he was swept near the bank by the current.
Goodpasture was being treated for hypothermia at Washoe Medical Center, where he was listed in satisfactory condition.
