Historic preservation ballot initiative filed
Thursday, March 26, 1998 | 11:25 a.m.
The petition drive is a response to the uncertain future of the historic Mapes Hotel, the fate of which will be decided by the City Council in May.
The initiative filed on Wednesday would require that historic buildings owned by the city or its redevelopment agency must be rehabilitated and preserved.
Backers of the petition drive include former mayor Pete Sferrazza and five historic preservation advocates.
Organizers need to collect about 7,900 valid signatures by July to qualify the measure for the ballot.
