Historic, cultural sites in Nevada receive preservation funds

The state Commission for Cultural Affairs chose from $9.5 million in projects statewide for the $2 million in funding available this year.
A little more than a quarter of the total went to southern Nevada projects, including $63,107 to rehabilitate an adobe on the site of the historic Kiel Ranch, probably one of the two oldest buildings in the state.
The Huntridge Theater was allocated $153,397 for final construction work to preserve the building, which opened in 1944.
Funding for other southern Nevada projects included $166,990 to the Junior League of Las Vegas for the purchase of land to preserve the historic Whitehead Mansion, built in 1929; $80,583 for roof work to the Boulder City Railroad Depot and Clark County Heritage Museum; $44,660 to the Las Vegas Valley Water District for preservation work in the Big Springs area; and $23,301 to Boulder City for work on the Water and Power Building.
In the Reno area, $150,485 was awarded to rehabilitate the First Church of Christ, Scientist Building in Reno after its purchase by a theater coalition.
Also awarded was $129,126 to open the McKinley Park School in Reno as a cultural center; and $62,136 for work on the Lake Mansion in Washoe County.
Funds for projects in areas outside the Reno and Las Vegas areas include:
-$170,874 to the Forth Ward School Museum in Virginia City for structural repairs.
-$161,165 to the Churchill Arts Council to turn the historic Oats Park School into a theater and art gallery.
-$146,602 to the Western Folklife Center in Elko, the home of the Cowboy Poetry Festival.
-$141,748 for structural work on Piper's Opera House in Virginia City.
-$75,728 to the Carson City Brewery Arts Center, located in a former brewery in Carson City, to restore an upstairs meeting room.
-$71,845 for work on the White Pine Historical Railroad's freight building in Ely.
-$66,019 to the Thompson Opera House in Pioche, one of the last three standing 19th century theaters in Nevada.
-$61,165 to the Mineral County Council on the Arts for the use and rehabilitation of a historic school building in Hawthorne.
-$56,311 to the Tonopah Mining Park for rehabilitation of some structures in the park.
-$51,456 to the Genoa Courthouse Museum for structural work on the oldest standing courthouse in the state.
-$47,573 to the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City to convert a basement into a performance and meeting center.
-$41,748 to Pershing County to convert the basement of its circular courthouse into a cultural center.
-$33,981 to the Dayton Historical Society for work on its museum in a historic school.
