Editorial: Contract deserved a reconsideration

Thursday, March 26, 1998 | 10:58 a.m.

The convention center's telecommunications contract is significant; it is estimated to be worth about $48 million. The board's staff had recommended that a different firm, which is based in Nevada, receive the contract. But the board on March 10 voted to give the contract to US Telecom of Houston, citing its concerns over a credit report showing PCS World in Reno had one of its lowest ratings. After the board's March 10 meeting, a PCS World executive said the credit report was based on three-year-old information from that company's worst year. Board member Mary Kincaid, citing this new information, asked that the board reconsider its initial decision.

But at Tuesday's meeting, the board deadlocked 6-6 on whether it should reconsider its decision. PCS World, a taxpaying company from Nevada, deserved to be heard, especially in light of the fact that it believed the board relied on erroneous information in making its initial decision.
