Whalen named Gorman head football coach

Tuesday, March 24, 1998 | 8:41 a.m.

New Bishop Gorman head football coach Roger Whalen is hoping the third time is indeed the charm.

Whalen, who served as a Gaels' assistant coach during the 1991-92 season and again during the 1996-97 campaign, will return to the school this fall, Gorman President Rev. Thomas von Behren announced Monday.

"I've wanted this job for quite a while, and I didn't think it was ever going to come open," Whalen said. "I've always loved Bishop Gorman. It has a tradition-rich atmosphere, and the people are so supportive."

Whalen, who has been a coach and teacher for 27 years, has spent the past year at Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest, Calif. Whalen's football team finished with a 6-4 record last fall, winning the league title before losing in the playoffs.

"We're very excited to bring Roger back," von Behren said. "I looked for experience, enthusiasm and public support, and he had all three. He's a winner, and I'm looking forward to him taking over the program."

Whalen replaces Mike Brascia, who resigned in early February with a 10-17 record in his three seasons. Last fall, the Gaels finished 1-5, sixth in the seven-team Sunset Division.

"I think we can be competitive," Whalen said. "The kids are competitive, they're sharp and their work ethic is good. I think this can be the best job in Las Vegas."

Whalen said he plans to join the team for part of its spring practice schedule and will leave the weight program in the hands of the current assistant coaches, most of whom will remain on the football staff.
