But Southern Nevadans' response to the crime has been nothing short of outstanding. It all began at the scene of the shooting, when Metro Police Sgt. Randy Sutton was able to resuscitate the baby. Sutton, who visited the baby last week, told the SUN's Cathy Scott that part of Jacqueline's lip is missing and will require ongoing plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Southern Nevadans have been there with financial assistance, helping the family pay for the baby's mounting medical bills. Last week Sutton gave the parents a $19,000 check from the Las Vegas Hilton hotel-casino, which held fund-raisers, to defray hospital expenses. In addition, Jacqueline will receive free cosmetic surgery from local plastic surgeon Dr. George Alexander.
Sometimes it's tough not becoming jaded by depressing news, especially news accounts of increasingly violent crimes. So it's refreshing to know that even when a horrific crime is committed, Southern Nevadans are willing to come together and help the victim.
