Letter: Removal of Christian standards leads to moral decay in nation
Sunday, March 22, 1998 | 9:30 a.m.
I would like to respond to a letter published in the SUN on March 9, in which Sherryl Anctil referred to the particular verbiage used in the prayer at the Las Vegas NASCAR 400 on Feb. 28. They mentioned that they agreed with a prayer prior to the race, but they were offended by the fact that the prayer ended with the statement, "We ask this in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen."
Your reader noted that she was Jewish and other religions are very uncomfortable with the reference to Jesus Christ and a more generic prayer would be appropriate.
I would like to remind this reader that this is neither a Muslim nation nor a Jewish nation, but a Christian nation, founded on Christian principles. I personally believe that many of the ills of our nation today are directly linked to the removal of Christian morals and standards such as honesty, commitment to marriage, family, prayer in schools and respect of our fellow man.
Our nation is on the verge of total moral decay (remember Rome) mostly because Christians have time and time again backed down from their moral stance because of the pressures of your reader and the stigma attached from doing what's right.
Whatever happened to the people who stood for what's right, no matter who's uncomfortable with it? Personally, I say we start every sporting event giving praise to our Lord Jesus Christ, and every other event for that matter. It's high time Christians quit running scared and start standing up for what they believe.
