Bryan calls for moratorium on new logging roads in roadless forest areas

Saturday, March 21, 1998 | 11:22 a.m.

At a news conference Friday, Bryan joined representatives from the Sierra Club, Alaska Rainforest Campaign and Western Ancient Forest Campaign in supporting a proposed moratorium on such road building.

"These last precious areas should be protected for future generations," he said. "Logging and road building would not be taking place in these roadless areas if the taxpayers were not picking up the tab."

Last month, the U.S. Forest Service called for an 18-month moratorium on the construction of such roads. The public comment period on the plan was extended until March 30.

Last year, Bryan offered an amendment to a bill to eliminate a timber industry subsidy called the Purchase Road Credit Program and to cut $10 million from the Forest Service road construction budget. It failed by a vote.
