Friday, March 20, 1998 | 11:13 a.m.
The temblor with a magnitude of 4.7 struck at 2:43 a.m. close to the California line, 25 miles south of Tonopah Junction, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake was followed by at least six aftershocks in the range of 1.9 to 2.6 magnitude.
A dispatcher at the Esmeralda County sheriff's office said he had never heard of Tonopah Junction. He added that he hadn't heard about any earthquake, either.
The epicenter is about 50 miles northeast of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., which has been the site of thousands of quakes in recent months.
