An 18-year-old woman was raped in a public restroom Wednesday after she met a man for a blind date at Gary Dexter Park, Metro Police said.
About 4 p.m., the couple met for the first time at the park, between Upland and Jones boulevards just south of Evergreen Avenue, sexaul assault Sgt. Clint Robison said.
Several boys were playing basketball at the time, and a couple of children were playing on the swing set when the rape occurred, police said.
"It was a blind-date situation," Robison said. "She met a man there for the first time. She had talked to him on the telephone a few times. She had to use the restroom, and he followed her in there and sexually assaulted her."
The victim knows the man's first name only, Robison said. He had called her for the first time about a week-and-a-half ago, he said.
"It was a wrong number," he said. "He asked for so-and-so, she told him he had a wrong number, then he asked, 'Who are you?'"
She agreed to meet him after he called her several times, Robison said.
"He was pretty convincing," he said.
The suspect was described as a black man, about 5 feet 10 inches tall with a mole or birthmark on his right cheek.
He was seen leaving the area in a large, white, two-door sedan, police said.
