Three teens arrested in connection with armed robberies
Monday, March 9, 1998 | 10:08 a.m.
The department said on Monday that Wesley Lee LaPorte and Daniel Lloyd Hellwinkel, both 18, are charged with committing the robberies at the Johnson Lane General Store and at a Wendy's on U.S. 395. They are being held under $150,000 bail each.
A 17-year-old who works at the Burger King in Gardnerville is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit robbery.
About $1,300 was taken at the Johnson Lane store on Feb. 11 and some $3,000 was taken March 6 from the Wendy's.
Investigators said about half of the money has been recovered, along with items that link LaPorte and Hellwinkel to the robberies, including two handguns.
Deputies said Hellwinkel is not related to the family that owns the COD garage in Minden.
