Letter: Replace slot machines with state-run lottery
Monday, March 9, 1998 | 10:44 a.m.
What we did have in these stores was the New Jersey state lottery, and the best part about having the lottery instead of gaming machines was that all of the lottery's proceeds went toward educating our children.
If Jones is really as concerned about helping the children of Las Vegas, she should use New Jersey as an example. If she succeeds in removing the machines from our groceries and convenience stores, she should talk to the governor and lobby for a state lottery to replace the revenues lost by these stores, and let all other proceeds from the lottery go toward educating the children of Nevada.
This would be a win-win situation; the stores wouldn't lose their revenues, and it would greatly help the children of Las Vegas.
