Cave Rock talks resume

The Forest Service is seeking public comment to help in management of the rock outcropping, cut through by U.S. 50. Cave Rock is considered sacred by the Washoe Tribe, but also is popular with rock climbers.
After briefly placing the rock off limits last year, the Forest Service issued a modified closure in December that prohibits the installation of new climbing bolts. Now, the Forest Service is seeking a long-term management policy.
At Tuesday's session, Forest Service archaeologist John Maher will discuss the National Historic Preservation Act. The agency has said Cave Rock may qualify as a national cultural site as defined by the act.
Tuesday's hearing will be followed by a March 17 session in Carson City.
