Nevada to get $23 million more for highway projects
Tuesday, March 3, 1998 | 3:38 a.m.
The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to add $26 billion to planned highway spending over the next six years by ensuring that all the taxes Americans pay at the gas pump go to road and infrastructure programs. Some gas tax money traditionally has gone to other uses, including deficit reduction.
The full Senate was expected to take up the amendment later in the day.
Nevada would receive an additional $23 million for highway projects.
"When you are growing as fast as Nevada is, $23 million in extra highway funds can go a long way in alleviating traffic and crowded roads," said Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, a Democrat and senior member of the committee. "This bill contains a fair share of overall dollars for Nevada."
The environment committee had agreed last fall to spend $145 billion for the highway bill.
