Letter: Paxon’s political exit may be short-lived

Tuesday, March 3, 1998 | 10:57 a.m.

Right now, Gingrich can breathe easier at not having to "cry havoc! and let slip the dogs of war," had Paxon stayed on to challenge Dick Armey.

We could almost hear Newt's sigh of relief seven months ago as the Paxon coup failed. He might have recalled Caesar's wary words, "Let me have men about me that are fat; sleek-headed men and such as sleep o' nights. Yon Cassius has a lean and hungry look; he thinks too much; such men are dangerous."

Gingrich will apparently get through the Ides of March unscathed and gird up for upcoming political battles, such as the fall ballot box. But White House 2000 is still a couple of light years away, and Bill Paxon looks to have neither gained much weight nor lost much hair. And while he will be tending to family matters, one would be willing to venture that is not the only concern he will lose sleep over.
