An evidentiary hearing began on Monday for Steven McCabe, 15. The hearing, the juvenile equivalent of a trial, is held before a judge but without a jury. It is scheduled to last most of the week.
Prosecutors opened their case with a freshman who testified that McCabe tried to enlist him in a plot to lock the doors during an assembly and open fire, targeting people on a list he had marked for death.
McCabe said he also had a list of people who would be spared.
McCabe's attorney, Mark Jackson, said his client was a below-average pupil who craved attention and made a poor decision on how to get it.
McCabe, a Yerington High School sophomore, was arrested Dec. 17 at the school after officers discovered handgun and shotgun ammunition in his locker.
Possible actions the judge could take range from probation to sentencing McCabe to the Nevada Youth Training Center in Elko.
