Elko sees 44 percent increase in city payroll over 6 years

Over the same five-year time period, the number of city workers from 17 percent, from 182 to 213 last year.

The largest increase in employee numbers came in the category of "general government."

That department increased 50 percent, from 14 employees in 1992 to 21 in 1997. New positions added included personnel officer, city planner, planning analyst, planning department administrative assistant and systems coordinator.

"The city's grown quite a bit since '92," said Elko City Manager Linda Ritter. "As the town grew, I think the city saw a need for planning."

The growth in government coincided with a 22 percent population increase, she said.
