Trial scheduled for teen charged with murder plot
Monday, March 2, 1998 | 8:25 a.m.
Steven McCabe was arrested Dec. 17 after officers discovered handgun and shotgun ammunition in his locker at school, plus a list of possible accomplices for an alleged murder spree at a school assembly.
Prosecutors will try to show that the sophomore plotted the murder, while his attorney will seek to prove it was only a bad joke gone wrong.
McCabe has been held in the Carson City Juvenile Detention Facility since his arrest.
Lyon District Judge David Huff in January refused to release the boy to his parents, saying he poses a potential danger to the community.
Because McCabe is a juvenile, there will be no jury in the four-day trial. As many as 40 witnesses are expected to testify.
The allegations shocked residents of the quiet, rural community.
