Two counties oppose Navy’s plan to acquire more land

Monday, June 29, 1998 | 4:29 a.m.

NAS Fallon wants to withdraw 127,000 acres around three training ranges as a safety buffer zone and an expanded area for search and rescue training.

The deadline for public comment on the proposal was Friday.

"Virtually all of central Nevada will be either under military airspace, withdrawn for military purpose or used for the transportation and storage of nuclear waste," Pete Goicoechea, Eureka County Commission chairman, said in a letter opposing the move.

"Furthermore, we are aware of possible airspace designations in southern Idaho and western Utah, both of which will potentially affect central Nevada," he wrote.

Heather Estes, chairwoman of the Lander County Commission wrote, "The past incidents of flyovers and sonic booms over the Austin community has left many central Nevada residents leery of any action by the Navy to increase military activities."

Her letter also complained that increased military flights would further restrict general aviation activity.
