NOW pushing campaign to deny re-licensing of Mike Tyson

Monday, June 29, 1998 | 4:09 a.m.

NOW's Southern Nevada chapter today announced a nationwide campaign to try and block Tyson's relicensing.

Tyson was banned from boxing by the commission last July 9. He will be eligible to re-apply to the commission at the end of one year, although he has not indicated if or when he might do so.

In a letter to NOW chapters in all 50 states, Southern Nevada NOW President Anne Golonka noted Tyson has been convicted of rape. He was banned for biting the ears of Evander Holyfield in a bout at the MGM Grand a year ago.

In her letter, Golonka urged other NOW members to contact the commission and express outrage at the prospect of Tyson returning to the ring.
