After 266 days, Elko finally breaks 80 degree mark
Monday, June 29, 1998 | 4:28 a.m.
For the first time since last fall, the temperature on Sunday broke the 80 degree mark, topping out at 85.
It took 266 days for the temperature to reach 80 since it fell below that level after Oct. 4, 1997.
The length of time between summer-like days is also a new record, the National Weather Service said. The previous record was in 1970-1971, when it took 255 days, or until June 16, for the mercury to reach 80.
The forecast called for the temperatures across the Great Basin to remain in the upper 80s to around 90 for the rest of the week.
