Letter: Aren’t there uninhabited places where nuclear waste could go?

Friday, June 26, 1998 | 10:07 a.m.

And why doesn't someone distribute petitions to stores, casinos, libraries and other public buildings, requesting signatures of all those who are opposed to the shipping of nuclear waste to Yucca Mountain? Once they're collected, they should be sent to the entire congress and senate. Let them see how many of us are opposed to the shipments.

In addition, our public relations department should send press releases and other promotional material to the national media, touting Nevada's opposition to nuclear waste storage in our vulnerable state.

Let's not depend solely on our few elected officials to stave off the efforts and clout of the enormous opposition they face. Our outcry, together with our signed petitions, would be a good way to start the public relations campaign rolling.

Logic would submit that nuclear waste should be stored in the states where they were created. But how often has logic ever prevailed with the entire body of elected officials?
