Legislators approve funds to bolster remedial programs

Friday, June 26, 1998 | 11:41 a.m.

The remediation money was provided as part of the 1997 Nevada Education Reform Act for schools where more than 40 percent of the students performed poorly on basic skills tests.

The money was approved Thursday by the Legislature's Interim Finance Committee, which also made a special $2 million appropriation for class-size reduction programs in the state's 17 school districts.

The money makes up revenue the school districts had anticipated they would get in estate taxes.

Doug Thunder, deputy state superintendent, said if trends continue, estate taxes could be $14 million below projections in the next fiscal year.

The estate tax money automatically goes to school districts for the class-size reduction program.
