Jobless rates down in May

DETR chief Carol Jackson said the state's economy remains strong, and job growth should continue due to numerous projects that are underway or in the planning stages.
Agency statistics show there were 924,400 people working in all industries during May, up 5,500 from April. There were 39,500 people without jobs, down from 41,600 in April.
Casino-related service industries were up 1,900 workers between April and May, construction was up 1,800, trade was up 1,700, and transportation-utilities was up 900.
Manufacturing hiring was up 300, finance-insurance-real estate was up 300, mining was up 100 and government was down 800.
DETR's monthly report shows the Las Vegas metropolitan area had an unadjusted May jobless rate of 4.1 percent, down from April's 4.3 percent.
The employment total in the area, which includes Clark and Nye counties in Nevada and Mohave County in Arizona, was 658,500 and the jobless total was 28,500.
The Reno area's unadjusted rate was 3.8 percent, down from 4.2 percent in April. The employment total for Washoe County was 181,800 and the jobless total was 6,700.
The Carson City-Douglas-Lyon-Storey rate was 5.9 percent, down from April's 6.6 percent. Employment totaled 50,650 and there were 3,200 people without jobs.
The Elko-Eureka counties' jobless rate was 6.1 percent, down from 6.9 percent in April. Employment totaled 22,050 and the jobless count was 1,420.
Monthly rates for other areas of the state aren't available from DETR.
