Las Vegas Stars scorecard — June 25, 1998
Thursday, June 25, 1998 | 8:59 a.m.
By Spencer Patterson
Las Vegas catcher Creighton Gubanich came to the plate in the seventh inning needing a triple for the cycle. He didn't get that, although he did touch third base, on his way around during his second home run trot of the night. Gubanich finished 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBI to spearhead the hosts' 17-hit, 11-run assult. It was Gubanich's first four-hit game as a Star, as well as his first multi- homer contest with the team. "He came into the game not hitting very much," Stars manager Jerry Royster said. "When you connect a couple of times, you don't worry about the cycle. You just want to touch all the bases." ... Stars first baseman Dusty Allen, who joined Gubanich with two homers, has hit half of his eight dingers this season against Omaha. Wednesday night marked just the second time this year that two Stars have had multiple home runs in the same game. ... Stars right-hander Stan Spencer struck out eight batters, the fifth time he has struck out eight or more this season, to improve his record to 5-3. ... Omaha center-fielder Jeremy Giambi, younger brother of Oakland Athletics' first baseman Jason Giambi, had an interesting evening for the visitors. After striking out against Spencer his first three times up, Giambi hammered a no-doubt-about-it two-run shot -- his 10th of the year -- over the right-field fence in the seventh inning. Coincidentally, Giambi's older brother also hit his 10th homer of the season in Oakland's game against San Francisco.
Upcoming games
The Stars will send right-hander Brian Tollberg (1-1, 4.13) to the mound tonight against Omaha right-hander Roland De La Maza (5-4, 5.78) for the final contest in the four-game series. Las Vegas left-hander Heath Murray (4-4, 3.77), sidelined since June 9 with a strained elbow, will make his return to the mound on Saturday for game one of the team's series at Tucson. He'll likely face Sidewinders' southpaw Chris Michalak (1-3, 4.54).
Attendance
Tuesday's crowd: 3,045.
Season total: 164,364 (38 dates).
Average per date: 4,326.
