Editorial: Keep up awareness of wildfire dangers

Thursday, June 25, 1998 | 10:47 a.m.

Don't be fooled by the fact this has been an unusually wet year, thanks to El Nino. The heavy rains turned the desert green. But the National Interagency Fire Center has warned that it could be a long, hot summer for firefighters.

That's a recipe for disaster, because the new growth produced by El Nino will also mean more potential trouble spots as the greenery dries up. Already last Sunday, federal Bureau of Land Management firefighters had to contain a brush fire that burned 300 acres along the Virgin River 75 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

Citizens who enjoy outdoor recreational activities in this state must bear in mind that there could be extreme fire danger in July and August in dry areas that are struck by lightning. Don't make matters worse for firefighters by doing something foolish that could set off a blaze. Mother Nature is sure to give us all we can handle.
