PBA: Ryan Shafer moved into Showboat lead

LAS VEGAS -- Ryan Shafer took over the lead after the first round of match play in the Professional Bowlers Association's Showboat Invitational Thursday evening.
Shafer, who also led after the second round, is seeking his second championship round appearance of the year. The former PBA Rookie of the Year posted high games of 278, 256 and 269, a match-play record of 5-3 and a total pinfall of 9,467 to go with his 232 average.
Mike Edwards, who finished third in this tournament two years ago, dropped one spot to the No. 2 position. Edwards, who owns one title and is the only pro bowler to be inducted into the American Indian Sports Hall of Fame, has dropped 9,457 pins.
Third was PBA Hall of Famer Dave Husted. Husted, who has 13 titles to his credit, has knocked down 9,401 pins.
Rounding out the top four was Jeff Lizzi, who also owns one title. Lizzi has toppled 9,399 pins.
There will be two more rounds of match play Friday, with the top four finishers advancing to Saturday's championship round.
