Liberty timber-cutting project rejected

Friday, June 12, 1998 | 12:29 p.m.

The project, near Independence Lake between Truckee and Sierraville, was rejected after the forest supervisor with the Tahoe National Forest concluded a more comprehensive plan was needed to manage spotted owl habitat.

But officials still hope to initiate a management plan that will allow for timber-cutting while not disrupting the foraging habitat of the spotted owl.

Numerous environmental organizations, scientists, public members, and the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Board opposed the project.

Craig Thomas of the Center for Sierra Nevada Conservation, an affiliated group of the Sierra Nevada Forest Protection Campaign, said. the project could alter water quality and disrupt area wildlife.

"This is a major victory for clean water in Tahoe," he added.
