Right-handed pitcher Mike Zipser officially joined former UNLV teammates Kevin Eberwein and Sean Campbell as a professional baseball player this week, signing with the Philadelphia Phillies, who selected Zipser in the 26th round of last week's amateur draft. Zipser will start his pro career with Class A Batavia of the New York-Penn League. Eberwein, the Rebels' starting third baseman, and Campbell, UNLV's starting catcher, are both currently in Peoria, Ariz. for a San Diego Padres mini-camp. Next week, Eberwein will join the Class A Clinton (Iowa) Lumber Kings, while Campbell will become the newest member of the Summer Class A Idaho Falls Braves. Also, one-time Eldorado left-hander Aaron Hee signed with the New York Mets and was assigned to Summer Class A Port St. Lucie, Fla. of the Gulf Coast League. The Las Vegas-area's top two picks in last week's draft -- Green Valley right-hander Mike Nannini and Bishop Gorman pitcher/outfielder Jason Van Meetren -- are both still negotiating with the Houston Astros. Both players have already signed with Pac-10 universities -- Nannini with Arizona State and Van Meetren with Stanford.
