The shockwaves created by the Las Vegas Valley's continued growth have reached the Community College of Southern Nevada.
In a bid to keep pace with the growing numbers of students, CCSN will break ground on a $25 million education center at its Charleston Campus during a ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday.
The complex was funded by the 1997 Nevada Legislature and will offer students 150,000 square feet of new classrooms.
"One of the most important concerns for me is the students' learning environment," Regent Howard Rosenberg said. "Where kids are concerned it is vital that they have the tools they need made available and that includes buildings."
According to representatives at the Charleston Campus the construction of the three-story complex should be completed by fall 1999.
"Thanks to Nevada taxpayers, our Board of Regents, lawmakers and Gov. Bob Miller, this much-needed facility will double the number of classrooms and students served at our Charleston Campus," said Dr. Richard Moore, CCSN's president.
Joining Moore to kickoff the project at 6375 W. Charleston Blvd. will be Sen. Ray Rawson, R-Las Vegas; Assemblywoman Merle Berman, R-Las Vegas; Board of Regents chair Dr. Jill Derby; and vice chair Shelly Berkley as well as UCCSN Chancellor Richard Jarvis.
The new complex will cover nearly 15 acres on the Charleston Campus. Architect Robert A. Fielden designed the new building after receiving acclaim for his work on the Charleston Campus Academic and Computing Center in 1996. Fielden was honored by both the Pacific Coast Builders Conference and the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.
