The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation noted the jobless rate compares with a national rate of 4.3 percent and neighboring California's rate of 5.9 percent.

DETR statistics show there were 917,700 people working in all Nevada industries during April, up 4,500 from March. There were 40,600 people without jobs, up from 39,400 in March.

In the Las Vegas area, unemployment rose from 4.1 percent to 4.2 percent. There were about 28,800 people out of work, up about 900 from March.

The Reno area's rate held steady at 4.1 percent with 7,100 jobless. And the Carson-Douglas-Lyon-Storey area dropped from 6.6 percent to 6.4 percent with 3,430 people out of work.

Elko and Eureka counties, hit by a downturn in the mining economy, posted a 7 percent jobless rate, up from 6.5 percent. There were 1,630 people out of work.

Statewide, hiring in casino-related service industries was up 1,900, and construction was up 1,400 employees between March and April.

Mining was up 100, manufacturing was up 100, transportation-utilities was up 100, trade was up 300, finance-insurance-real estate was up 200, and government was up 400 in the same period.

DETR chief Carol Jackson said a year-to-year comparison shows job growth in the state remains strong at 4.5 percent.

"We see no slowing in the economy over the summer months ... in fact, several new projects should perpetuate the job growth," she added.
