Man pleads guilty to setting estranged wife’s car on fire

Monday, June 8, 1998 | 10:21 a.m.

William Martin Braitenback, 31, pleaded guilty to felony charges of interstate stalking, interstate violation of a protection order and arson.

He admitted that on Jan. 31 he called his estranged wife in Las Vegas, threatened to destroy her car and told her she better move out of the country because he would be coming after her, U.S. Attorney Kathryn Landreth said.

About five hours later, Braitenback traveled from California to Las Vegas and set fire to the woman's car and fled the scene.

He was arrested the next day and has been detained at the Clark County Detention Center ever since.

Landreth said that one week before the incident, Braitenback was released from state custody following a six-month sentence on a battery/domestic violence conviction involving his estranged wife.

Braitenback will be sentenced on Sept. 25.
