edd Robert Gamez in car accident
Las Vegan Robert Gamez, a member of the PGA Tour, was injured Tuesday night in a single-car accident in Bethesda, Md., and had to withdraw from the tour's Kemper Open that began today.
Gamez, riding alone in a courtesy vehicle provided by the Kemper Open, skidded off a rainy road and crashed into a tree. He was immediately hospitalized at Bethesda Naval Hospital, where he expects to remain until at least Friday.
"I was briefly knocked out," he told the Washington Post. "I just missed a turn. I went left and the road went right. I'm pretty banged up."
Gamez suffered a bruised spleen and a bruised liver. Police indicated alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
"I'd been off for three weeks and I was really looking forward to playing the Kemper," Gamez said.
He hopes to recover and play in next week's qualifying round for the U.S. Open at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.
