Letter: Drink nightclub neighborhood among city’s most dangerous
Wednesday, June 3, 1998 | 9:10 a.m.
I suggest that it may well be the 200 block of Lana Avenue.
Two killings, several critically wounded, hundreds (maybe even thousands) of calls to Metro Police for service, hundreds of vehicular citations and a radically increased crime rate over the last three years.
Yes, all within about 100 yards of the 200 block of Lana Avenue. What has changed? Lana Avenue is the street behind the Drink, which opened three years ago this month.
Despite objections from the neighbors and Metro, the county commissioners have approved request after request, variance after variance and permit after permit for the Drink. All of this with the argument that it is "good for Las Vegas."
The Drink was originally described to the neighbors as an "upscale restaurant" as it wiggled its way through the licensing process. In fact, "upscale" quickly evolved into a myriad of "low-life" problems.
All of this and there is not a daiquiri bar within sight.
How many deaths does it take for the commission to realize that this is not good for Las Vegas?
