Gene Stus, winner of two straight PBA senior tournaments, held the lead Monday night after the first round of qualifying in the PBA Showboat Senior Invitational.
Stus, who finished third in last year's LaS Vegas tournament, posted high games of 289, 279 and 257 and averaged 239 for his 1,917 pinfall total. He is seeking his 11th senior title.
Five pins behind was PBA Hall of Famer Dave Davis, who used high games of 269, 255 and 244 to land himself in the No. 2 spot. Dick Baker, looking for his first senior title, was third with 1,861 pins.
Another four pins back in fourth place was PBA Senior Rookie of the Year Robert Day-Phelan, followed by Dale Eagle, another former Senior Rookie of the Year, with 1,846 pins.
Qualifying continues through Wednesday evening. The top fourth of the field will return Thursday morning for an additional round of qualifying, after which the field will be trimmed to the top 24 for match play Thursday evening and Friday.
The top five after match play will compete in the championship round Saturday.
