City Council briefs
CLASSROOM LEASE -- The Las Vegas City Council approved Monday a proposal to continue to lease at $1-a-month classroom space at the Stupak Center to the Clark County School District to help South Meadows Village residents receive high school diplomas or GEDs. Students ranging in age from 15-19 years old are given the opportunity to make up missing credits so they can graduate from high school. Adults receive similar instruction to receive GEDs through the program which is run by Horizon School and assisted by the city's Leisure Services Department.
High Court limits liability of governments
The court said that to permit suits filed against a number of governments arising from a single incident "may have a massive and deleterious effect upon state and local treasuries."
Firefighters recall power behind strike of lightning
Capt. Scott Taggard, 35, fire engineer Ralph Clary, 38, firefighter Mark Rainey, 34, and American Medical Response paramedics Glenn Glacer, 32, and Shannon Cavey, 35, were hit as they were responding about 3:30 p.m. Friday to an accident on Interstate 15 near the Lake Mead cutoff.

Forum gives voice to senior citizens
The Nevada Silver-Haired Legislative Forum was created by the 1997 Legislature and authorized by Gov. Bob Miller to appoint one member from each state Senate district on a nonpartisan basis. The purpose of the forum and its 21 members is to identify issues and concerns affecting Nevada's seniors and to report them to the governor for possible legislative action.
City to build $14 million parking garage
Also at Monday's public meeting, in related action, the City Council agreed to fast track a bill that will allow part of the Fremont Street parking garage to be leased out for future retail development.
