Construction began last week on a Smith's Food and Drug Center, the town's first grocery store and retail outlet.
"This is number one, the first big grocery outlet and shopping center in Dayton," said John Allen, real estate broker and owner of Allen & Company, the real estate arm of the nearby Rose Peak subdivision. "We expect the Smith's to open before Christmas."
The center is located on 14 acres along U.S. 50 between Pine Cone and River roads at the east end of Dayton.
Smith's has 26 stores in Nevada, but the supermarket is only the third in Lyon County. It will employ 75 people, company officers said.
